Inventors Hall of Fame Includes Pioneer of GPS Technology PDF Print E-mail
You can thank Roger Easton for GPS Tracking technology. He invented a system called Timation that uses time and navigation. His system was used by atomic clocks in satellites to provide observers with accurate position and precision time data. The same principles led to the current GPS satellites and systems.

The National Inventors Hall of Fame inducts those who contribute to inventions that are used to change the way we do things and improve society in specific ways. The inventions that are honored must be covered by a United States patent and recognized for its contribution to science or practical arts.

Each year, the recipients of the awards are selected by a panel of experts from the organization as well as representatives from various scientific and industry groups. The number of inductees now stands at 421 with the 2010 additions. You cannot discount the effect that GPS Tracking has had on our society in just a few short years. These are the areas that are most affected and will continue to be in the future:

Law Enforcement

By far, law enforcement has become one of the most prolific users of GPS Tracking. Ankle bracelets have been used for years now to track convicts who have been restricted to house arrest to serve out their sentences. The use of GPS Tracking in this way is increasing. The reason is that the cost of incarceration has grown prohibitive and is now going to be used for only the most serious of offenders.

Investigators are turning to GPS Tracking in larger numbers to help solve cases by monitoring suspects who engage in illegal activities. Many times, drugs or stolen goods are at the center of cases where GPS Tracking is used. These devices allow police to track the locations of suspects without their knowledge which leads to evidence in support of an arrest and in the obtaining of a conviction in court. It helps reduce the number of hours required to work cases and brings them to a conclusion quicker.

Businesses

GPS Tracking is a staple of fleet operations world-wide. Being able to track deliveries of goods has taken on more importance because of theft of cargo and other crimes. But these devices are also used for productivity purposes as well. This dual use has help many businesses defy the effects of an ailing economy and remain profitable when without it; they would not be able to do so.

Municipal and Public Organizations

There are many ways that municipalities can benefit from GPS Tracking, but chief among them is tracking of vehicles and other assets under their care. Employee's activities can be monitored for compliance to rules of use. There are more applications of GPS Tracking in our society, but these are the most important. If you haven't experienced the uses of these devices yet, you will soon. They are here to stay and will continue to make a positive impact all around us.
